On most residential lots in Adjala-Tosorontio, New Tecumseth and Essa, no permit is needed for a tree on private property. Caledon, King Township and lands on the Oak Ridges Moraine or Niagara Escarpment have tree by-laws that may apply, and any wooded lot over a certain size can fall under the Simcoe County Forest Conservation By-law. Yes. That is most of what we do. Trees near structures are taken down in pieces, with each section roped and lowered. If the tree is touching or within the utility's clearance zone of the primary lines, we coordinate with Hydro One for a temporary disconnect or a line clearance before we start.

Most residential removals are done in a single visit, often within two to five hours including cleanup. Very large trees, trees with heavy decay, or jobs with difficult access can take a full day. We tell you the plan and the timing in the estimate.

By default the brush is chipped and everything is hauled away so your yard is clean. If you heat with wood, tell us and we will cut the trunk into stove-length rounds and stack them where you want them.

Mature shade trees generally need attention every three to five years. Young trees benefit from structural pruning every two to three years so they develop strong branch unions. Fruit trees are pruned every year. Dead or broken limbs should come out as soon as you notice them regardless of the season.

Dormant season, late fall through early spring, is best for most species because the structure is visible and pests are inactive. Maples and birch bleed heavily when cut in late winter, so they are done in summer. Oaks should not be cut from April through July to avoid attracting the beetles that spread oak wilt.

Not when it is done properly. Correct cuts just outside the branch collar seal quickly, and we never take more than about a quarter of the live canopy in one season. What does hurt trees is topping, flush cuts and stripping the interior, which is why we do not do any of them.

Yes. Clearing roofs, eaves, chimneys and the service line to your house is routine work for us. Branches within the required clearance of the primary distribution lines on the road are a utility responsibility, and we can help you get that request in.

Yes. Cedar hedges, privacy screens and ornamental shrubs are all part of the service. Badly overgrown cedars are brought back gradually over more than one season so they do not end up brown and bare.

Cost is driven mainly by the diameter of the stump measured at ground level, plus depth, root spread and access. A small stump is inexpensive; a large old maple stump costs more. Several stumps done in one visit are much cheaper per stump, and adding grinding to a removal we are already on site for is the best value. Estimates are free and firm.

Six to twelve inches below grade is standard and is plenty for sod, seed or a garden bed. If you are planting a new tree in the same spot or pouring a slab, tell us and we will go deeper.

Yes. We grind deeper, remove the bulk of the chips and backfill with topsoil so the new tree is not sitting in decomposing wood, which robs nitrogen. If you have the room, planting a metre or two away from the old location gives the new tree the best start.

The machine is compact, fits through a standard gate and does not rut a dry lawn. We order utility locates for every job so buried gas, hydro and communication lines are marked before the cutter wheel goes in the ground. Sprinkler lines and dog fences are not located by the utilities, so please tell us where they run.

Most stumps take somewhere between fifteen minutes and an hour depending on size and root spread. A property with several stumps is usually finished in a morning.

Lot clearing is quoted per project after a site walk because density, tree size, stump removal, access and haul-away all matter. A residential backyard clear is typically a day. A rural building envelope with mature trees and stumps can take several days with an excavator. The estimate is free and firm.

Clearing a wooded area of one hectare or more usually needs a permit under the Simcoe County Forest Conservation By-law, and lands near wetlands or watercourses may need a permit from the NVCA or TRCA. Federal rules protect active nests, so significant clearing is best scheduled outside of roughly April through August. Smaller jobs can often go ahead after we check for active nests.

If there are wires down, call Hydro One first at 1-800-434-1235 and stay clear. Otherwise call us right away so the tree can be removed and the roof tarped before more water gets in, then notify your insurer. We provide photos and an itemised invoice for the claim.

Typically yes if the tree hit an insured structure like the house, garage or fence. A tree that fell in the yard without damaging anything is often not covered, though some policies include a debris allowance. We document the work in the way adjusters expect.

Warning signs include a new or increasing lean, cracks or splits in the trunk, mushrooms or shelf fungus at the base, large dead limbs in the crown, cavities, soil lifting on one side of the root plate, and a tree that failed to leaf out. Any of these deserves a look before the next wind or ice event.

Ash with a mostly full crown can be protected with trunk injections repeated every two years. Once the crown has thinned significantly the tree cannot be saved, and it is safer and cheaper to remove it before the wood becomes brittle.

Cabling installs high-strength cables between major stems in the upper crown so they support each other in wind. Bracing adds threaded rods through a split or weak union. Installed to industry standards and inspected every few years, a cable system can keep a mature tree safe for decades at a fraction of the cost of removal.
